Equipment

We rely on a variety of tools to assist during our investigations. These tools help us measure and quantify the evidence we are collecting. While we may arrive at a location with the entire arsenal, we may not use everything. Each location will have specific needs and challenges that determine the tools we use. For newbies, we've described some of the most popular tools of the trade below.
EMF Meter- these measure electromagnetic fields (EMF) in the environment directly surrounding the device. Since these devices pick up electrical fields near them, the room should be sweeped to determine where hits are and develop a baseline. This way, results that occur in an area where no EMF was detected previously could be considered credible.
Digital Voice Recorder- these are used to record EVP (electronic voice phenomenon) which are said to be spirit voices
Cameras- tried and true, cameras are a staple of paranormal investigating. While the use of film cameras is rare, most investigations are documented using video recordings to help preserve and insure evidence is captured legitimately.
Motion Detectors- Several things are used to detect motion such as "cat" balls. Newer to the field, these cat toys light up when moved and, surprisingly, are NOT easily set off. In an area with no disturbance, they can indicate activity. Other motion detectors we use are the music box which uses IR sensors and play music when motion is detected, and an LED light tracer which detects movement in its area by lighting up.
Spirit Box/Estes Method- the spirit box quickly cycles through radio stations creating a static white noise. It's theorized spirits can manipulate the radio waves to speak. The Estes Method has one person, a sitter, blindfolded and listening to the spirit box through noise deadening headphones (such as drummers headphones) while blindfolded. A second person, an asker, asks questions the sitter can't hear. The sitter repeats any words or sounds heard through the spirit box. The goal is to get responses that match up to the questions being asked.
REM Pod- these devices detect emf and temperature changes. When a change is detected in the immediate area of the device, it will alert. Like anything else, these devices can cause false positives, especially when walkie talkies or other electrical devices are near them. We got our cool custom music box and rem pod here.
SLS Camera- using Kinect motion tracking sensors and software, this system will track bodies in the area the camera is pointed. The bodies appear as stick figures on the screen. The sensors can misinterpret objects as bodies so results should be debunked before considered credible. We got our SLS camera here.
Thermal Imaging Camera- thermal imaging camera, such as FLIR, maps temperature in each area of the camera view. Sudden drops in temperature are associated with paranormal experiences, the theory being spirits are collecting energy in the atmosphere, causing the temperature to drop rapidly. We use this thermal imaging camera.
Dead Bell- these measure electromagnetic energy and work as a way for spirits to communicate. Through the adjustment of energy an old fashioned bell will ring. The dead bell is a nostalgic tool which can help with yes/no question responses.
MagLite Flashlights- a popular, affordable and easy device used for communication. When a MagLite is positioned between ON and OFF it can be easily manipulated by spirits. This is a great tool for yes/no question responses but false results are HIGH. We only consider it actual communication if the responses are quick and relevant.
